I love hydrangeas. My grandmother had some beautiful ones when I was growing up. She put rusty nails in the ground to provide the acidity they love. I like them most because they come in beautiful blue and purple.....my favorite colors!
We planted a couple of hydrangeas the year after we moved into the house which would be 1994. A couple of years they bloomed nicely I dried a bunch. Then they kinda didn't want to bloom anymore. I don't know what was up with that....but a lot of times after the green leaf shoots would start to come on we would get a hard freeze and all the little shoots would turn black. It would take so long to grow the leaves there was never enough time to get blooms before it started frosting again!
After a brutal winter we had a fairly gentle spring and the leaves didn't freeze. And whoopee!!! I have hydrangeas blooming like crazy!!!I don't know if I will dry any this year or not. For some reason I'm not inclined to fool with it. But I sure do enjoy looking at them now!
Blessings!

What a pretty blue! I can see why you like them. Did the rusty nails really do the trick?
Your hydrangeas are beautiful, I have also heard that rusty nails improve the colour of the flowers.

I just bought one yesterday thanks for the rusty nail tip . Do you do anything special to prepare them for winter .Opps I forgot to check where you live I'm in Canada .
Hazel, I don't do anything, but you might want to google to see if there IS something to do....I'm not a very good gardener. Whatever survives and blooms, that's what we get!! You can also use coffee grounds or Mir-Acid (like MiracleGro) and the results will be the same. Hydrangeas, rhododendrons, azaleas, honeysuckle are all acidic soil lovers.
Beautiful flowers!
Those are beautiful!
Beautiful Becky. That's what I need to plant in our yard. I've had them at other houses we've lived in and love them. I espeically love it when they turn purple or pink. I like the blue too but it's neat to see what other things will make them do. Don't over fertilize. I did that with my azalea when I planted it and it died. I just planted another new one and I'm going to ignore it for a couple of years. Miracle Grow would probably be good. I used the special Rhodo/Hydrangea food and probably overdid it - as in if a little is good then more is better - not.
Oh my goodness Becky!!!! I love, love your hydrangeas they are the most beautiful flower. My daughter had white and blue hydrangeas in her wedding. I want to plant some in our new home.
Thank you for visiting me, I love it when you come to visit.
