This will be an odds and ends post. I'm rather scatterbrained any more....or let's say worse than before this upheaval with Rick's layoff and all that goes along with that.
I did finish a project, but it wasn't one of my UFO's. It was a quilt that one of my friends wanted for her expected grandson. So this is what I came up with....I quilted a sun and a cloud in the space around the sails at the top of each boat. I enjoyed making it and the fabrics worked out well.
We are adjusting to retirement. Some days are good, some days I seem paralyzed. I am just struck numb at the attitude towards workers in their 50's! Rick attended a seminar at the Unemployment Office and they were quite blunt in their lecture. If you are looking for a job and you are over 45, companies consider you a liability and will probably toss your resume. WHAAT?
Also, if you have a job interview coming up, color the gray out of your hair. Oh glory! It has given Rick pause to say the least to hear these things and then have no response to the resumes he has sent out for engineering jobs. One of the jobs was him up and down. Exactly what he is schooled to do and has done very successfully for decades. Not even a phone call. What's up with that!
On to other things.
I had to laugh at myself. I thought I had this fabulous stash that I could quilt out of for years. I have a stash all right, but it isn't thrilling me. Much too random....much too, ummmm yuck. The quilts I will make will look scrappy straight out of the chute instead of out of the scrap bin. I love scrappy quilts..intentionally made out of scraps, but my mind doesn't wrap around using lengths of cloth and having a scrappy look!
I guess I didn't have a clue how to build a stash.....maybe there is no formula. How did you build your stash? Project oriented? Color and shade oriented? Just lucky? How much yardage do you buy when stash building? I'm curious I guess as to where I went wrong....though the outcome will remain the same. Unless I have a previously unknown rich multi-millionaire relative that makes me beneficiary to their estate.....OR the contents of a quilt store fall out of the sky and land in my yard one day I will be working with what I already have. Stay tuned....could be very interesting....or just plain scary!!
I am having to take a different turn on the UFO Challenge. Some of the projects I had on the list was going to require me to purchase backing, batting, etc. At this time I just can't be doing that, so I have to substitute projects that I already have all of the elements for. So for right now, I am putting my brother's Dresden Plate into a sandwich and just work on it straight until I complete it. It will definitely take longer than one month. But it will be a completed UFO and that was the goal anyway.
Change and adjustment are the stuff of life.....so we are experiencing LIFE around here. And we are ok.....more than ok. We are blessed. The only difficulties I am having are all of my own making. Let's face it. I was spoiled. When I want fabric, I WANT FABRIC!! I'll get over it. No recovery from addiction is pleasant, is it.
The grandkids are growing like weeds!! Aubree turned 5!!!! Before you know it, Joe and Libby will have a birthday. Mia is several months from a birthday, but she is maturing like crazy. Where are my babies???!!! Well, here they are......

I hear you on the stash ,I have loads of fabric but it just doesn't speak to me ,I try to just buy one new fabric when starting a new project it gives me the incentive I need .
The grand kids are adorable , they grow so fast enjoy them while there small .
I am like you and Hazel a fair amount of fabric but nothing that cries out to me. Maybe I need to do is decide to use some from my stash and buy additional
co-ordinating fabric to complete a project.
Your grandchildren are beautiful, why do they grow up so fast? Mine now range in age from 23 to 9 years and a great grandson who is now 14 months, don't you just want to slow down time?

Your griefs were near the top of your post. Your blessings came after you'd reviewed your griefs. That's how it should be.
As for stash? Add neutrals. Even if it means turning fabric over to the wrong side. Add neutrals and even the wildest colors go together. Look for projects that fit the stash you have. Hang in there. Lane
I don't have any hints on the stash building. I buy whatever I want and hope for the best. I sometimes buy a yard and sometimes I will be 4 or 5 yards. Sometimes I base how much I buy on price. I have had fabric for 3 or 4 years and think I will never find a use for it and then, all of a sudden, I find a perfect pattern!
I am so sorry about your husband and his job searching. We are all told that there is no discrimination, but we all know there is! Not fair at all.
Your grandbabies are so sweet looking. I bet it is hard to hold back from squeezing them all the time!
Becky - these are such gorgeous photos of the kids!
So, where have you been lately? I read your posts on FB, but it's been a while here on the blog. Have you had any time to sit and stitch?
Regarding stash, mine is pretty random, too. If I ever have to make a coordinated quilt, I'm in trouble!
WOW! Sounds like we are both going through close to the samething.
I had a decent stash but it has dwindled down to nothing. I guess we will just have to build them back up as we can!

As to stash, I buy what I like with no thoughts of what I'll make, generally. I do have a few pieces of fabric purchased especially for a quilt but not that many.
When anyone hits close to retirement age, we're a liability; we cost too much to hire, train and then there's retirement costs. Even when we're "perfect" for the job, we still have to be trained the way that particular company wants us to work. It stinks but that's the way of it and I wish it weren't so.
